Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Micky van de Ven has reportedly attracted interest from both Manchester United and Liverpool.
According to the Daily Mail, the defender could become a target for both clubs if Tottenham Hotspur suffer relegation. The situation has reportedly alerted several clubs to the possibility that Van de Ven could become available.
Both Manchester United and Liverpool are monitoring developments surrounding the Tottenham defender as they assess defensive options.
Manchester United assessing defensive options after recent injuries
Manchester United did not take part in the FA Cup fifth round action this weekend. The club instead had time to reflect on their 2–1 Premier League defeat to Newcastle United on Wednesday.
The result marked Michael Carrick’s first loss since taking charge of the team.
Carrick had to cope without centre-backs Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt for the match against Newcastle United. Injuries have also affected other defenders in the squad, including Harry Maguire.
Those issues could encourage Manchester United to consider strengthening their defensive options during the summer transfer window.
Micky van de Ven could strengthen Manchester United defensive options
Manchester United currently sit third in the Premier League table with 51 points, placing them in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League.
The squad has also been strengthened by recent additions in attack. The arrivals of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have provided further options in the forward line.
If Van de Ven were to join Manchester United, he could potentially become a regular starter in the team. Injuries and inconsistencies among the current centre-back options have created opportunities for defensive reinforcements.
A move could also offer the defender the chance to play regularly in a team competing for major honours.
Liverpool also monitoring Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven
Liverpool are also reported to be interested in Van de Ven. The club has previously demonstrated an ability to respond strongly following difficult seasons.
After finishing third in the Premier League during the 2020–21 campaign, Liverpool challenged for the title the following season. The club also reached the Champions League final and won both domestic cup competitions.
Liverpool finished fifth during the 2022–23 season but returned to third place under Jurgen Klopp, while also winning the EFL Cup in his final season in charge.
Liverpool could still compete for honours despite uncertainty
There is some uncertainty surrounding Liverpool’s current campaign. However, the club has a history of competing for trophies even after challenging seasons.
Arne Slot’s side could still finish outside the Champions League positions this season. Even so, Liverpool may remain competitive for silverware during the 2026–27 campaign.
