Manchester City’s season could still turn into something special. Not too long ago, there were murmurs that this campaign might fall short of expectations. Now, Pep Guardiola’s side find themselves firmly in the Premier League title race once again.
They sit just four points behind Arsenal. On top of that, City have progressed to the Champions League knockout rounds, reached the fifth round of the FA Cup and will face the Gunners in the League Cup final next month. Momentum is clearly building at the Etihad Stadium.
One of the biggest reasons behind that shift has been the gradual return of injured players. And ahead of this weekend’s clash against Newcastle United, Guardiola could receive another timely boost.
Manchester City injury update ahead of Newcastle United clash
Erling Haaland was rested during the recent FA Cup win over Salford City. However, there appears to be little concern over his fitness. The Norwegian striker was spotted at the Etihad and did not look to be in any discomfort. He is expected to return for the Newcastle game.
Savinho is another player nearing full fitness. The Brazilian winger has resumed training and could have featured last weekend if needed. All signs suggest he should be included in the squad on Saturday.
Jeremy Doku is also closing in on a comeback. He is believed to be “close” to returning and might make the bench, although a late decision is expected.
Further down the list, Mateo Kovacic continues his recovery from Achilles surgery. A return after the March international break, possibly against Chelsea in April, has been mentioned.
There are also concerns over Max Alleyne, who was forced off early against Salford, while Josko Gvardiol is expected to miss the remainder of the season following a broken leg.
It remains to be seen how many of these players Guardiola will risk. But with Newcastle visiting and the title race tightening, timely returns could make all the difference.
