Atletico Madrid and Barcelona join race for ex-Manchester United forward

Diego Simeone (Atletico Madrid boss) and Hansi Flick (Barcelona boss)

Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are in the race to sign the former Manchester United and current Olympique Marseille forward Mason Greenwood, according to Fichajes.

Since leaving Manchester United after an unwanted controversy, Mason Greendwood has resurrected his career.

First, he left for Spain to play for Getafe on loan. After a successful spell in LaLiga where he scored 10 goals in 36 appearances, he secured a move to Marseille.

After moving to France, Greenwood is living up to his true potential. In just 48 games for the French side, the former England international has netted 30 times.

This season alone in Ligue 1, Greenwood has scored 7 goals in 9 games. So, it is quite natural that big European clubs will have an eye on the forward who is so prolific in front of the goal.

Atletico Madrid join Barcelona in race for Mason Greenwood

Atletico Madrid already have two great strikers in Alexander Sorloth and Julian Alvarez. Without any doubt, the Argentine is one of the best signings under Diego Simeone.

However, the Colchoneros are looking for a player who can operate from the wider areas and still score goals for fun. And, Mason Greewood fits that profile wonderfully.

The situation is a bit different for Barcelona. The Catalan club will part ways with their current striker Robert Lewandowski either in January or next summer.

They already signed Marcus Rashford from Manchester United on loan this summer. Also, they are ready to make the move permanent after the England star rediscovered his form at Camp Nou.

Hansi Flick already has the likes of Raphinha and Lamine Yamal at his disposal along with Rashford to operate from wings. That is why they are looking to an outright number 9.

The way Mason Greenwood is scoring goals for fun, Barcelona know that if they can sign him, they will get a goal scorer who can at least net 30-40 goals in each season.

Manchester United keeping an eye on Mason Greenwood’s situation

Manchester United will be looking at the situation of Mason Greenwood with a keen eye. While selling Greenwood to Marseille, they inserted a 50% sell-on clause.

It means if Marseille sell Greenwood to either Barcelona or Atletico Madrid, United will receive 50% of the entire amount. And, that is where this deal might get complicated.

Both LaLiga clubs are not in a situation to spend a huge amount of money on a player. And Marseille must charge a huge fee which should be above the double of €31.6m they paid United.

Therefore, a fee of around €100m is something Marseille will charge because they want to make some profit by selling such a prolific goal scorer like Greenwood.

Will Manchester United re-sign Mason Greenwood?

In the past, there have been reports that Manchester United are very happy with the progress Mason Greenwood made since leaving the Red Devils.

United are looking for a new striker in January because Joshua Zirkzee wants to leave to get more game time. Now, the speculations about a Greenwood return have emerged once again.

However, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS will be wary about resigning Mason Greenwood. The reason is the worry of a fan backlash.

Greenwood and his partner Harriet Robson were involved in a controversial incident that led to the departure of the forward from Manchester United.

So, the Red Devils didn’t sell Greenwood because of footballing reasons. They sold him because of the things happened outside the football ground.

Thus, these Mason Greenwood to Manchester United rumours are nothing more than speculations as United are not going re-sign him.

Nevertheless, if the fee matches the potential of Barcelona or Atletico Madrid, Mason Greenwood could surely return to LaLiga.
