Liverpool continue their UEFA Champions League campaign on Tuesday evening when they travel to face Galatasaray in the first leg of their round of 16 tie. RAMS Park will host a high-stakes European contest between two sides who have shown strong attacking qualities this season.
The Reds sit sixth in the Premier League but produced an impressive league-phase campaign in Europe, finishing third to secure automatic qualification for the knockout stage. Galatasaray, meanwhile, battled through a playoff round to reach the last 16 and will attempt to build an advantage before the return leg at Anfield.
The Turkish champions also carry confidence from their previous meeting with Liverpool earlier in the season. Galatasaray recorded a narrow 1-0 victory during the league phase in September 2025, proving they can compete with Arne Slot’s side on the continental stage.
Recent Form
Galatasaray arrive in good domestic and European form. Okan Buruk’s side recently navigated a dramatic playoff tie against Juventus, eventually winning 7-5 on aggregate after extra time. Despite defensive vulnerabilities, their attacking output remains a major strength.
At RAMS Park, Galatasaray are particularly dangerous. They have scored at least three goals in eight of their last 13 European matches at the stadium. However, defensive solidity remains an issue, with only one clean sheet recorded in their last eight home games in continental competition.
Liverpool’s recent form has been slightly inconsistent. They suffered a 2-1 Premier League defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month before responding with a 3-1 victory over the same opponent in the FA Cup.
Slot’s side have shown strong attacking form in recent weeks, scoring three or more goals in three of their last five matches. Their away record in the Champions League also deserves attention. Liverpool have conceded just twice in four away fixtures while scoring nine goals during those matches.
Team News
Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk is expected to field a physical lineup designed to disrupt Liverpool’s defensive structure. Victor Osimhen will lead the attack and provide a direct threat against Liverpool’s centre-backs.
Baris Yilmaz and Noa Lang are likely to support Osimhen in wide areas. In midfield, Lucas Torreira could partner Mario Lemina to provide defensive protection and physical presence.
Liverpool continue to deal with several injuries, although only a few absentees would normally be considered starters. Hugo Ekitike is expected to lead the line in place of Alexander Isak, while Jeremie Frimpong should start at right-back with Conor Bradley unavailable.
Florian Wirtz may operate from the left flank, allowing Dominik Szoboszlai to play in the number ten role behind the striker.
Tactical Battle
The midfield contest could decide the outcome of the first leg. Galatasaray will likely attempt to disrupt Liverpool’s rhythm through Torreira and Lemina, both aggressive ball-winners who thrive in physical battles.
Liverpool will rely on technical quality in midfield. Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch will attempt to control possession and progress the ball into advanced areas. If Szoboszlai finds space between the lines, Liverpool could create consistent chances for Mohamed Salah and Ekitike.
Galatasaray’s wide attackers will also test Liverpool’s full-backs. Quick transitions could expose defensive gaps if Liverpool push too aggressively forward.
Predicted Line-ups
Galatasaray
Cakir; Sallai, Sanchez, Bardakci, Jakobs; Torreira, Lemina; Yilmaz, Akgun, Lang; Osimhen
Liverpool
Alisson; Frimpong, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Wirtz; Ekitike
Score Prediction
- Prediction: Galatasaray 1-1 Liverpool
Galatasaray’s home atmosphere and attacking threat should cause problems for Liverpool. However, the Premier League side possess greater European experience and attacking quality. A balanced first leg appears likely before the decisive return match at Anfield.
