Manchester United plan major midfield overhaul with free agent target

Michael Carrick - Manchester United manager

Manchester United are preparing for a huge summer rebuild. The focus sits firmly on central midfield. The club believe the area needs leadership and presence. The plan includes more than one major signing.

However, the strategy goes beyond a single profile. United want experience and reliability. They also want players who can handle pressure. The recruitment team see midfield as the priority.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich have already confirmed a high-profile exit. One of their senior midfielders will leave when his contract ends in June. That confirmation has drawn attention across Europe.

At the same time, Fabrizio Romano has linked Manchester United with the situation. He has stated that United hold clear interest. Still, no advanced talks have taken place. Also, other clubs are monitoring the same opportunity.

Romano has also underlined the scale of United’s ambition. He insisted that the club will go very big in midfield this summer. He even suggested two marquee arrivals remain possible. So, this potential free signing would only form the starting point.

Before naming the player, context matters. The midfielder spent eight seasons at Bayern Munich. He joined the club in 2018 from Schalke. Back then, he arrived as a slim and flexible option.

However, his profile changed during the COVID-19 break. He returned stronger and more imposing. He described himself as more confident and robust. That transformation reshaped his role.

Under Hansi Flick, he became essential. Bayern dominated the 2019–20 season. They won the Bundesliga and the Champions League. His physicality and timing stood out.

Still, injuries disrupted the following two campaigns. Later, Thomas Tuchel arrived in 2023 and tried to move him on. Although Bayern blocked the exit, his minutes dropped sharply. That decline cost him a place at the 2024 European Championships.

Yet the response defined his character. Vincent Kompany initially shared doubts. However, effort and persistence forced a rethink. Kompany later praised his hunger and attitude in training.

United lack several strong personalities in midfield. Even with improvement under Michael Carrick, the dressing room needs edge. That reality shapes the recruitment thinking.

United also need a replacement for Casemiro. Ideally, Manuel Ugarte would have filled that role. However, four different coaches have shown limited faith in him. That situation has pushed United back to the market.

Now, attention turns to Leon Goretzka. The 30-year-old offers Champions League pedigree. He also brings a front-foot style that differs from Casemiro. His arrival would likely complement younger targets such as Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, or Carlos Baleba.

All three would demand massive fees. Therefore, a free agent with elite experience holds real appeal. The summer window will reveal how decisive United choose to be.
