Manchester United appointed Erik ten Hag in 2022 with the hope that the Dutchman would change their fortune.
In his first season at Old Trafford, he ended United’s trophy drought by beating Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
The Red Devils also made it to the final of the FA Cup in the same season. However, Manchester City beat them to clinch their 7th FA Cup title.
However, the following year, Manchester United got revenge under Ten Hag, as Pep Guardiola’s men lost in the final. And, United were crowned the FA Cup champions.
It felt like the next season would be the year for United when they truly challenged for the Premier League title.
However, due to uncertainty in the boardroom, the performance on the pitch was affected. And, Ten Hag got the sack towards the end of October 2024.
The 55-year-old returned from a managerial hiatus this summer and joined Bayer Leverkusen to replace Xabi Alonso, who left to become Real Madrid manager.
However, within the first month of the season, Ten Hag was shown the door, as he fell out with the players and the board.
Now, Football Buzzer can exclusively reveal that Erik ten Hag is close to returning to the club that made him one of the most exciting managers in European football.
In his first stint as the Ajax boss, he made the Dutch club a force to reckon with. His Ajax team of young talents humiliated the mighty Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League.
Also, he brought identity back to Ajax, and the entire world turned to Amsterdam to see a young group of footballers playing an exciting brand of football.
Erik ten Hag won two Eredivisie titles with Ajax. But since his departure from the Dutch club, the results have gone south. Now, Ajax want to reunite and recreate the old magic with Ten Hag.
Both Ajax and Ten Hag have planned a meeting, and if everything goes well, the former Manchester United manager will be back in his old dugout.
